Life through the Lens

By: Nicole Long- Country Director, Laos

Woo! I just recently finished sorting through over 3000 photographs I took on a recent holiday. My travel companion kept telling me to watch my shutterbug finger because she knew about the pain I would be going through later. Now I completely understand her warnings. I have never sorted through so many from a trip before; at least one where I was only there for 10 days. It makes me never want to bring a camera along on my trip again!  Then again I would hate not to capture some of the amazing things I saw on my adventure.

Taking pictures sort of becomes a part of the journey nowadays. Sometimes the camera makes you stop and look at something from different angles instead of just a quick glance. The photographs even capture things the naked eye doesn’t see, which are great to discover while shifting through endless temple and sunset photographs (I realized I have a new addiction – shooting the sun in all forms).  I am by no means a photographer, but I do enjoy snapping away at things that catch my attention. In the future however, I will attempt to lay off the shutter.

I have a few shots from the trip below and I just wanted to see which ones were your favorites. I think I will get the one with the most votes printed and framed for my office. So, tell me which one you like best!  And just to add a little more fun, tell me where the shot was taken! Thanks for the help in my decision making process!

  • i like the shot of the fisherman with the fish cage the best. I seem to think it is taken in Burma but exactly where i dont know!

Thanks Ric! I love that one as well, definitely a front runner for me. You are right, they were taken in Myanmar at the beautiful Inle Lake, which was probably my favorite destination on the trip. The fisherman’s skills are beyond impressive and truly fascinating.

I love them all, but I think my favorite is the monks studying, that will look beautiful up on the wall! Then again, the kid running with the tire is awesome and really depicts the country. I’m not saying what country that is, because I don’t want to ruin it for the others:)

Ain’t technology grand? Imagine If you wanted to have those 3000+ photos developed like in the old days. :-)

Often we spend so much time taking photos, we don’t know what we have seen until we get home and view the photos. Such is our technologically dominated lives these days.

I think the one with the sun and temples was my favorite – wondering where they were all taken.

Thanks DrJer! That would have been a lot a rolls of film and quiet expensive, but I guess then we would more selective of your shots. I like that one as well, the temples were just amazing. All these photos were taken in Myanmar. Pictures 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 were taken at Inle Lake. Pictures 5, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14 were taken in Bagan.
Pictures 1 and 12 were in Nagapali Beach and the 4th in Yangon.

I love the first one and the one from the horse cart heading to the temple the most : )

That horse cart was such a plus to the trip and I loved the driver. It was a great day and I think that is why I like it so much cause it brings back the memory of a fantastic day.

I hope you are comforted by knowing you can not pick the wrong one. This is soooo hard to choose. I adore the first one – sunny and matches your personality. I love the man fishing – a peaceful and hopeful feeling. Those two tied for first place but the horse pulling the cart on the way to the temple is in second place. A montage of photos? How much room do you have on the wall?

I am not well enough to travel so I am useless at choosing locations. I do love to enjoy everyone’s photos, though. Thanks for sharing these.

Thanks Janet! I really love, love that first picture. The beach was so unbelievably picturesque and the people so warm and welcoming so I feel like this picture really captures Myanmar. I really think I might have to do a few prints because I just can’t decide! It is a toss up between pictures 1,3,6, 14. Then again I love most of the others as well. Maybe I should just have a wall of Myanmar pictures??

  • I really like that one as well, definitely a front side sprinter for me. You are right, they were taken in Myanmar at the wonderful Inle Pond, which was probably my preferred location on the journey. The fisherman’s abilities are beyond amazing and truly amazing.
